A Few October Books
Oct. 13th, 2021 08:39 pmIt has been a very stressful month. Just when I think everything is going to be okay all the sudden something else goes wrong. ljbookbingo so that's at least something going my way. I hope everyone has a good rest of the week!
I read this back in high school but I saw this annotated version and figured it was time for a reread. I love annotated versions of historical classic fiction because there is so much nuance that can be lost to a modern reader that an annotated book will explain. I have always enjoyed the musical although the actual novel is sooooooo melodramatic and definitely a product of its time. Christine from time to time kind of drives me nuts, she is naïve beyond belief for most of the story and her emotions are all over the place. Raoul is also very emotionally and has very little gumption. Erik is given so much tragic backstory but his harassment and abduction of Christine and the fact he is also a murderer several times over makes it hard to feel too sorry for him. I did mostly enjoy the story and getting to learn more about the time period and history of opera in France. (Using this one for the Classic Horror Square)
Hexmaker is the second entry into the Hexworld series. I really enjoyed Hexbreaker so I wanted to read the next in the series as soon as I could which is unusual for me because I tend to space out books in a series. I liked the pairing in this book as well, both Mal and Owen are delightful. I couldn't help feeling for both of them. Mal because he is a familiar in a society the discriminates against them and Owen because societal expectations are basically ruining any chance of him finding happiness. Then they meet at a crime scene and they change each other's destiny. They also had a D/S aspect to their relationship which is not really my cup of tea but YMMV. Overall I enjoyed it and will probably continue on with the series. (Using this one for the features a witch or wizard square)
