under_the_silk_tree: stack of old books (books)
This has been a MONTH and it is not over yet. *sigh* I could use any good: wishes, prayers, or thoughts you can send my way. It is mostly family issues and has made my anxiety which has been fairly good lately to sky rocket. But I am trying to just take life one day at a time and not to catastrophize the future too much. Hopefully things will get better soon.  And I hope everyone has a good upcoming week.

In the meantime here are some more books for [livejournal.com profile] ljbookbingo I am still having a good bit of fun with this challenge.

Harlem, 1926. Young black girls like Louise Lloyd are ending up dead.

Following a harrowing kidnapping ordeal when she was in her teens, Louise is doing everything she can to maintain a normal life. She's succeeding, too. She spends her days working at Maggie's Café and her nights at the Zodiac, Manhattan's hottest speakeasy. Louise's friends might say she's running from her past and the notoriety that still stalks her, but don't tell her that.

When a girl turns up dead in front of the café, Louise is forced to confront something she's been trying to ignore--several local black girls have been murdered over the past few weeks. After an altercation with a local police officer gets her arrested, Louise is given an ultimatum: She can either help solve the case or let a judge make an example of her.

Louise has no choice but to take the case and soon finds herself toe-to-toe with a murderous mastermind. She'll have to tackle her own fears and the prejudices of New York City society if she wants to catch a killer and save her own life in the process.
~Goodreads Description

I really enjoyed this book. Louise was great pov character. I loved her relationship with Rosa Maria and her friendship with Rosa's brother. The mystery was good and the journey Louise goes on to solve it was very compelling. Some of the writing comes off a little choppy but overall I really loved it and can't wait for the next one. (For the Love of a Good Mystery Square)

This was another delightful entry into the Rose Gallagher series. I loved getting to see Rose as she tries to find her footing in her new job as a Pinkerton agent in their special division branch that deals with all thing supernatural. She is trying to complete her training while also partnering with her former boss Thomas, on various cases. Which is another complication because she is in love with him and she isn't sure about his feelings for her, also they have to work together so any romance is a no no that's not even taking into account that he is the wealthy landed gentry and she is a former maid from Five Points. I enjoyed the mystery and the side characters where intriguing and quirky. I will definitely be reading the next one. (For the Orange, Red, or Brown Cover Square)
