In this fresh and original retelling of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, Mrs. Bennet's greatest fear comes to pass--Longbourn is entailed to Mr. Collins. Elizabeth finds work as a governess in London, widening the social divide between her and Mr. Darcy and making it more difficult than ever for them to find their way to each other...~Goodreads Description
Kara Louise wrote one of my favorite Pride and Prejudice au's so when I saw this at my library I had to give it a go. I enjoyed the twist of this book with Elizabeth having to take on a job as a governess and then meeting Darcy again after her position in society is even lower then it was before. It was well written with just enough angst but nicely balanced by the growing tenderness between them.

The youngest, half-goblin son of the Emperor has lived his entire life in exile, distant from the Imperial Court and the deadly intrigue that suffuses it. But when his father and three sons in line for the throne are killed in an "accident," he has no choice but to take his place as the only surviving rightful heir.
Entirely unschooled in the art of court politics, he has no friends, no advisors, and the sure knowledge that whoever assassinated his father and brothers could make an attempt on his life at any moment.
Surrounded by sycophants eager to curry favor with the naïve new emperor, and overwhelmed by the burdens of his new life, he can trust nobody. Amid the swirl of plots to depose him, offers of arranged marriages, and the specter of the unknown conspirators who lurk in the shadows, he must quickly adjust to life as the Goblin Emperor. All the while, he is alone, and trying to find even a single friend... and hoping for the possibility of romance, yet also vigilant against the unseen enemies that threaten him, lest he lose his throne – or his life. ~Goodreads Description
I have heard this book recced for years and as such it had been on my tbr for just as long. I always meant to read it, so when I heard the author was coming out with a standalone sequel set in the same world this year it finally gave me the impetus to read it. I have to admit the start was rough for me. Don't get me wrong I loved Maia the main protagonist right away, the reason it was hard for me at first to keep reading was because I have an acute sense empathy which leads to a lot of secondhand embarrassment. Maia is basically thrown into court with no previous knowledge and really no allies to help him so he stumbles a lot at the beginning. Then a wonderous thing starts to happen because he is above all else kind and tries to be fair to those around him and eventually he finds his footing and people he can rely on. Overall I really loved this book!
The challenge for these two squares was for two books to make one sentence:
Only Mr. Darcy will do the Goblin Emperor. (I would read that crossover)
With these last two books I have complete the Challenge! \o/
